do88 performance cooler for the intercooler system, designed for an easy installation fit in your BMW M3 / M4 F8X
The S55 turbo engine that powers the BMW M3/M4 F8X uses a top-mounted water-cooled intercooler instead of a “normal” air-cooled intercooler. The coolant in this system has its own separate cooling circuit, consisting of two parallel-connected radiators and a pump. The larger of the two parallel-connected radiators is located in front of the center radiator module, the second smaller one in front of the right wheel house.
Reducing the water temperature in this circuit is directly related to improved cooling of the charge air (lower IAT). For this reason, it is important to have high performance coolers in this system to maintain the lowest and most stable IAT possible during demanding driving. During all the testing we have done during the development of our entire BMW F8X M3/M4 range, we clearly see how peak power is directly related to IAT (intake air temperature).
When developing our improved performance radiator, we 3D scanned the space in front of the right wheel house of our M3 Competition both with and without the bumper. This gave us an accurate 3D model of the available space to build our radiator in. We found that the size of this radiator could be increased significantly in both frontal area and thickness if we also designed a new air duct between the radiator and the bumper cover.
Our final design features a 68mm thick dual row core with multi-channel tubes. We have retained the OEM style single stream layout. Our design increases the core height and thickness by 28mm, resulting in an overall 18% increase in frontal area and a massive 100% increase in core volume. To accommodate the installation of this massive cooler, we have developed a beautiful carbon fiber air duct that is made from prepreg material using the autoclave process. Our cooler has a ready to install installation with the OEM cooling hoses.
These improvements have resulted in a 5°C reduction in IAT in our testing when combined with our side-mounted cooler upgrade.
All this hard work results in a product that will, in one way or another, improve the performance of your vehicle, whether it's a stock car or a heavily modified monster! On the race track, on the street, on the drag strip - this cooler will be your faithful companion!
Key advantages of the do88 cooler (comparison figures to the series model):
- Larger core volume: 3393cm3 (1693cm3), 100% larger!
- Larger front area: 499cm2 (423cm2), 18% larger!
- Lower charge air temperature after the intercooler under the same conditions: 34°C (39°C), 5°C lower! *
- Highly efficient core with 8 mm fin height and multi-fin design.
- Multi-channel core tubes
* Measured at 240 km/h during a full throttle acceleration from 0-240 km/h on an airplane runway. Both tests were conducted on the same day under the same conditions.
